Thank you Arkie
My warmest thanks to Indigenous artist Arkie for the stunning mural she painted in the GJK carpark in Collingwood. The mural was officially unveiled by Councillor Danae Bosler, Yarra City Council Mayor, in May 2019.
Our goal in commissioning this mural was to represent the coming together of GJK Facility Services and GJK Indigenous Solutions, and I think she did a wonderful job.
Arkie explained her process in this way:
“This piece references contemporary Indigenous symbolism and movement to depict the coming together of people to create and achieve goals. The circular formations show these meeting places.
“Each individual is represented by the small dots that make up the meeting places and collaboration which helps to achieve a common goal. The lines connecting each place show the travelled paths between each project and between people.”
A big congratulations to GJK’s sales and marketing manager Carla Ton for coming up with this exciting initiative, and working with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation to find Arkie.
The video below shows Arkie’s mural as it unfolds over two days.
